CFDA discusses race issue in fashion

Though strides have been made in recent years to address the lack of colour on the runways, race remains a touchy subject within the fashion industry.

In an effort to tackle the issue head on, the Council of Fashion designers of America (CFDA) held a panel discussion in New York recently on the subject led by industry activist Bethann Hardison. With heavyweights like Prabal Gurung, Edward Emninful, casting director Anita Britton, Elle’s Samira Nasr and Laird+Partners’ Hans Dorsinville participating in the conversation, the scene was set for a lively exchange, through the resulting candid manner in which the talk played out.

“It has been something that concerns me as I grew up in the industry,” Hardison, a pioneer of diversity in fashion said at the discussion, according to a blog on the CFDA website.

“The fashion industry has struggled a great deal with diversity,” the former model added. “If television can be diversified, so can we.”

Hardison pointed to the late 1980s and early 1990s as a moment in fashion when the ethnic makeup of modeling began to diversify, but that didn’t last long, prompting Naomi Campbell and Talley to approach her with the plea to champion change. The first town hall meeting on the topic was held in 2007.

A takeaway was how different people have different takes on diversity, which can range from models and designers to age and size.

Bitton, a native of England, recalled how, when she started out back home, “It wasn’t a question of race but class. I came to New York very neutral and green. There’s a lot to be said for the word inclusive.”

Enninful said that when he plans a shoot, he looks for a character that fits the concept. “Beauty for me is beauty — whether it’s black or it is Asian, it doesn’t matter for me. I only use whoever is right for the story.”

Dorsinville said there is a “continuum” from runway to advertising—when it’s a mass brand, there is an opportunity to create a campaign feature a diverse group of multiple models, whereas a designer may just be looking for a face – a muse – to represent the brand, limiting options.

Gurung added that “Race is an issue that is not just in fashion. We need to address that immediately. As a designer, I want to work with the best girls, who are the best girls for me. Sometimes, an agent says ‘If you want this black girl, you have to use this white girl,’ whom I may not like.”

“Diversity, not just in race but also age and size, is very important to me,” he added.

Nasr, who is Lebanese and Trinidadian, said the issue of diversity reaches beyond models, and includes the designer community and other professional fashion environments. Addressing the audience, which also included models of diverse backgrounds and modeling agents, she noted, “This is most colorful room I ever seen in the fashion industry, and I want to say if we want to have change, we need to grow this room.”

Eva Mendes designs Spring15 line for New York and Company

Women’s workwear retailer New York and Company has roped in American actress Eva Mendes to design its spring 2015 collection inspired from the iconic styles of 1940s, 50s and 60s.

Replete with a modern twist, the range includes vintage inspired statement pieces created in classic silhouettes that can easily transition from sophisticated officewear to glamorous eveningwear.

While speaking about the line, the 41-year-old said in a press statement, “I hope that my line makes women feel good. It’s really about finding what works for you and making something easy. I love that my new spring collection makes getting dressed easy.”

In addition to stylish everydaywear ensembles like blouses, skirts and dresses in sizes 0 to 8, the Eva Mendes Collection also includes shoes and bridal partywear pieces.

The range is currently available for sale at New York and Company website and stores across the country as well as six specialty Eva Mendes boutiques located in Willowbrook (New Jersey), Shops at La Cantera (Texas), Broward (Florida), Coronado Center (New Mexico), and Valencia Town Center and Plaza Bonita in California.

Only once in a lifetime does one witness such creativity as was shown at the Zang Toi SS2015 Show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week entitled “A Privileged Life:  The American Dream.”

The collection, exhibiting 25 years in the fashion business, consist of purple and fuchsia color-blocked-knit dresses, fabulous purple robes to red tailored suits.  The collection took your breath away when the black and ivory empire waist strapless gown appeared on the runway. Another impressive part of the collection was the men’s evening wear.  An exquisitely tailored jacket and matching tie.  Handsome indeed.  Models were classy with fabulous waves and upswept hair dos.  Make up immaculate, done by Beauty by Rudy.

Backstage was just as exciting as the front of the house, with celebrity Whoopi Goldberg stopping by to congratulate Zang Toi on 25 years of fashion.  Chery Wills of NY1 News exclaimed “I love this collection!”

Neil Barret designs for Justin Timberlake’s world tour

Popular American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake will flash a designer wardrobe at the forthcoming second leg of his ‘The 20/20 Experience World Tour’, slated to kick off on May 30, 2014, in Abu Dhabi.

The 33-year-old musician has assigned the Italian-based English-bred menswear designer Neil Barret to create an array of custom-made looks for his upcoming high-octane stage performances.

Replete with graphical motifs inspired from the Bauhaus’ designs and Modernism doctrines, the stagewear range will feature minimalist clean-lined costumes, replete with the designer’s signature streetwear style tailoring.

In addition to Timberlake’s outfits, the Devon-born designer has also created costumes for the music tour’s band members and backing dancers.

Before the latest tour wardrobe design venture, Barrett had also collaborated with the celebrated singer on several other occasions in the past, such as the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and the Legend of Summer tour with Jay-Z as well as various music videos.

Justin has a penchant for smartly created designerwear clothing. Last year, he had roped in American designer Tom Ford for his third solo album ‘The 20/20 Experience’. Ford created bespoke suits, ties, shirts and other accessories for the album video.

Trained from London’s Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art, Neil Barret had earlier worked in leading fashion houses like Prada and Gucci before founding his namesake label in 1999.

Launched in support of the Georgian-born singer’s third and fourth studio albums—The 20/20 Experience (2013) and The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 (2013), The 20/20 Experience World Tour began on November 6, 2013 in New York City and is slated to wrap up on December 20, 2014 in Atlanta.

The famous American socialite and reality television star Kim Kardashian, known for her bold attention grabbing wardrobe preferences, has surprised all her fans by choosing to don a classy demure Givenchy look for her wedding.

The 33-year-old ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ actress, who recently tied the knot with her American rapper husband Kanye West, sported a pristine white couture wedding gown from the French fashion house.

Designed by the Parisian label’s current creative helm Ricardo Tisci, the made to order lace crafted ensemble featured a bib-front bodice with long sleeves, paired with a floor skimming fit and flare skirt as well as a flowing veil.

Giving a close competition to Kim’s elegant look was her famous 36-year-old American hip hop recording artist bridegroom Kanye West, who also wore a custom made Givenchy suit at the wedding. The Georgia-born singer-songwriter looked dapper in a smart black tuxedo teamed with a matching bowtie and a white shirt.

The popular celebs got married on May 24, 2014, at an extravagant ceremony which took place at the Renaissance Fortress in Florence, Italy.

Founded in 1952, the luxury label Givenchy specializes in haute couture clothing, fashion accessories and lifestyle products. The company is owned by the French multinational luxury goods conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy • Louis Vuitton.

The Italian-born 39-year-old Ricardo Tisci is an alumnus of London’s Central Saint Martins Academy. The designer took over as the creative director of Givenchy in 2005.

Fashion Week El Paseo showcases spring resortwear lines

The just concluded ninth edition of annual Californian fashion revelry Fashion Week El Paseo once again mesmerised with its lines of cool breezy beachwear and other colourful trendy attires by a host of talented designers.

James Mullin, the 39-year-old designer behind the California-based fashion, retail, and production company JM Couture, sent more than 100 high-end ready-to-wear and haute-couture designs down the runway.

Adorned with hand beading and peek-a-boo details, the lace, chiffon and silk made ensembles included Roman style gowns, pencil skirts, casual denims and lightweight resortwear pieces.

Other than single designer presentations from the likes of Zang Toi and Mullin, the seven-day-long fashion, beauty and lifestyle extravaganza also showcased a spectacular catwalk space shared by the city’s 10 most popular retailers.

Showcasing spring 2014 trends, the retailers featured gorgeous little black dresses and sparkling beaded sheaths from names like Charmaine Menn, the designer and owner of Bohimi label.

In addition to the style studded catwalk presentations, the event also included one-day-only pop-up shops, set up by more than 15 designers and retailers from Los Angeles.

Local retailer Just Fabulous featured its resort-oriented tops, skirts, and shorts, while She She Clothing Boutique showcased frilly pink dresses for little girls and an edited collection of romantic-hippie dresses and tops for the grownups at the soiree, held in Palm Desert.
