FASHION FOR CHARITY TO BENEFIT THE GEORGIE BADIEL FOUNDATION

On Thursday September 8th 2016, starting at 7:00pm Prive Group, Hype, Star Vodka, and DEG Production present the seventh annual Fashion For Charity Runway Show to Benefit The Georgie Badiel Foundation. The event will be hosted by super model Georgie Badiel to support her foundation. The finest of NYC’s society will be gathering for an illustrious runway fashion event. CFDA discusses race issue in fashion

Though strides have been made in recent years to address the lack of colour on the runways, race remains a touchy subject within the fashion industry.

In an effort to tackle the issue head on, the Council of Fashion designers of America (CFDA) held a panel discussion in New York recently on the subject led by industry activist Bethann Hardison. With heavyweights like Prabal Gurung, Edward Emninful, casting director Anita Britton, Elle’s Samira Nasr and Laird+Partners’ Hans Dorsinville participating in the conversation, the scene was set for a lively exchange, through the resulting candid manner in which the talk played out.

“It has been something that concerns me as I grew up in the industry,” Hardison, a pioneer of diversity in fashion said at the discussion, according to a blog on the CFDA website.

“The fashion industry has struggled a great deal with diversity,” the former model added. “If television can be diversified, so can we.”

Hardison pointed to the late 1980s and early 1990s as a moment in fashion when the ethnic makeup of modeling began to diversify, but that didn’t last long, prompting Naomi Campbell and Talley to approach her with the plea to champion change. The first town hall meeting on the topic was held in 2007.

A takeaway was how different people have different takes on diversity, which can range from models and designers to age and size.

Bitton, a native of England, recalled how, when she started out back home, “It wasn’t a question of race but class. I came to New York very neutral and green. There’s a lot to be said for the word inclusive.”

Enninful said that when he plans a shoot, he looks for a character that fits the concept. “Beauty for me is beauty — whether it’s black or it is Asian, it doesn’t matter for me. I only use whoever is right for the story.”

Dorsinville said there is a “continuum” from runway to advertising—when it’s a mass brand, there is an opportunity to create a campaign feature a diverse group of multiple models, whereas a designer may just be looking for a face – a muse – to represent the brand, limiting options.

Gurung added that “Race is an issue that is not just in fashion. We need to address that immediately. As a designer, I want to work with the best girls, who are the best girls for me. Sometimes, an agent says ‘If you want this black girl, you have to use this white girl,’ whom I may not like.”

“Diversity, not just in race but also age and size, is very important to me,” he added.

Nasr, who is Lebanese and Trinidadian, said the issue of diversity reaches beyond models, and includes the designer community and other professional fashion environments. Addressing the audience, which also included models of diverse backgrounds and modeling agents, she noted, “This is most colorful room I ever seen in the fashion industry, and I want to say if we want to have change, we need to grow this room.”

Created by the brand’s uber chic in-house design team, the range has been developed based on inputs taken from fashion bloggers Nicolette Mason, Chastity Garner and Gabi Gregg.

Speaking about the line, Stacia Andersen, senior vice president, merchandising, apparel and accessories, Target, said, “Target is synonymous with great design, and with the launch of AVA & VIV, we’re stepping up our fashion game for our Plus-size guests. From stylish original prints to the attention to detail and fit, this line is meant to impress and we can’t wait to share it with our guests.”

Targeted towards women who love fashion and appreciate a good value, the collection will offer a mix of trend-driven statement pieces along with stylish basics like bright skirts, tops, pants and accessories.

Africa Fashion Week New York 2014 shows seven designers

 The just concluded fifth instalment of Africa Fashion Week in New York showcased an array of eclectic runway collections from seven African-born fashion designers.

Anaba Wisdom Chidiebube, the designer behind the Nigerian label Weiz Dhurm Franklyn, mixed both modern and traditional elements in his latest form fitting, long and short, elegant and gold detailed dresses whereas the London-based Hazel Eki Aggrey-Orleans’ fashion-label Eki Orleans showcased colourful dresses and bikinis made from different material combinations.

The Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2013’s young designer award winner Igwedinma Rodney Emeka’s brand Mcmeka presented some 20 menswear pieces, including fitted elegant suits, while the founder of the Morocco Craftan New York label, Khadija Mouh, chose to feature both men’s and women’s creations such as bold coloured caftans and flowing dresses with hand embroidered bodices.

Designer Tiagbe of Kososhi displayed simple 1950’s silhouettes inspired vibrant ensembles that are fit to be worn to work as well as evening outings and the seasoned Kenyan fashion talent Sally Karago’s Mcensal Fashion House featured 10 designs made from indigenous African fabric, Kikoi.

Hilda Mauya, the founder of the Dahil Republic of Couture Fashion House, showcased her sophisticated couture pieces that accentuate the woman’s features with style and elegance. Made from a mish-mash of African fabrics with linen, cotton and dry lace, the line included several intricately detailed long dresses.

In addition to the catwalk parades, off-the-runway master classes and a presentation style event were also conducted on the sidelines of the three-day-long African American event.

The African Fashion Week NYC 2014 was organized under the P.A.T.C.H theme- where ‘P’ stands for Promoting Africa’s Economic Growth in Style, ‘A’ as in Awarding and Supporting Africa’s Young Creative Entrepreneurs, ‘T’ for Transforming Lives through Talent Grooming, ‘C’ means Creating Success Stories That Inspire and Resonate Globally, and ‘H’ is Helping Emerging Entrepreneurs Master Brand Development, Business Management and Revenue Generation.

Started in 2010, the 2014’s event was hosted by the New York-based fully integrated communications and brand strategy company Adirée. The firm specializes in public relations and promotions for Global business leaders in multiple industry segments such as entertainment, fashion, politics, media and government sectors. (PB)

Global fashion editors to partake in Ethiopia’s HAFW

REAL SIZE MODELS JAN 2011 COVER

Several editors from various international fashion media platforms will attend the forthcoming Editorial Edition of Hub of Africa Fashion Week 2014 (HAFW 2014), an Ethiopian fashion event that aims to highlight pan-African fashion design talents.

Slated to take place sometime in October 2014, the soiree will serve as a meeting ground for well-known global fashion writers, buyers and designers like Martha Jabo (Uganda), Mafi (Ethiopia), Sheria Ngowi (Tanzania), Taibo Bacar (Mozambique), Mataano (Somali) Katungulu Mwendwa (Kenya) and Kahindo of Modanik label (Congo).

In addition to the above mentioned list, the South African designer Ruald Rheeder will also make his HAFW debut. The Cape Town-raised talent is known for his menswear collections that have been housed in various boutiques, clothing outlets and Young Designers Emporium (YDE) in the country.

Introducing the designer, the HAFW website writes, “The RUALD RHEEDER® label has gained tremendous success and popularity and has become one of the best selling men’s labels in YDE earning him ‘Best New Designer’ Award when the line launched and more recently ‘The most consistently excellent performing designer’ award at the 2012 YDE awards.”

“In 2013 the RUALD RHEEDER® brand has come full circle with officially launching the ladieswear collection in YDE stores countrywide and boasts with Leigh-Anne Williams as the face of the brand,” says the website.

REVAMPED FASHION EVENT AT ESSEX COUNTY COLLEGE – Not Just Another Fashion Show

Fashion Avenue News – THE BRAND, had the pleasure of attending “REVAMPED” (reintroducing fashion), the 32 Annual Essex County College Fashion Show.  This fashion event was one not to be missed.  With over 15 designers listed, you wondered, can it get any better than this?  Then the models hit the 100 foot + runway and you knew it could.  The beauty of ECC show is they have models of all sizes; each walks in their own unique manner, and brings a different flavor to the runway.  They had Plus Size Models and Straight Size Models, short and tall, all beautiful.  The event was PACKED with standing room only.

Opening featuring Dream Girls, the show gave tribute with special performance by Elijah Brown dedicated to Amiri Baraka, a dedication to Raheam Mann and a special performance by K’lynn.  Some of the designers were;  Cisco, Vernest C. Moore, Drew Felton, Avant Gantalism, Duane Fish, House of Shavi, Terrell Mason Eman and Donna Byrd.  (Donna Byrd is part of the “Black Dress” exhibit at Pratt Institute).  The fabrics and colors were amazing, showing off all of the designer’s creative craftsmanship.

The had a great VIP section which held the “Fashion Elite” including Mega Publisher, John Blassigame, who was front and center.  Notable celebrities in attendance were Clarence Black – Couture Designer from New Jersey.  The setting was extremely professional and no matter where you were located, you could see the show.

When a show is this great, you have to say thank you to many, because no one person can do it all.  The Program Committee included: Executive Producer Gerald Holloway, Producers – ECC FEB, Program Director M. Sarah Army-Armendariz, Media Director Charles White, Videographer – Tri-State Ent., Technical Director Ben Miller, Models Coordinator, La Ruth, Duane Fish, Sal & Helena D. Lewis, Ticket Coordinator Stacey DeSouza & Adrian Price, Set Designer Bubba James & FEB Tem, Commentator Tyrone Chablis, Dance Choreographer Tiffany Ocansey, Make Up Artist Timothy Smart, Katlyn Conway & Crew, Zuri Johnson, Host Coordinator Khadijah Scriven, volunteers and more that helped with the show.

The REVAMPED show is NOT JUST ANOTHER FASHION SHOW, but a fashion show with a cause, a portion of the proceeds benefit Butterfly Walker Inc., Alliance of Hope for Lupus.  A special “Thank You” to Executive Producer, Gerald Holloway,  for allowing Fashion Avenue News – THE BRAND to attend such a fabulous, professionally produced event.  I hope we can do more together.
