The Museum of Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York is set to open an exhibition from December 5, 2013, which examines the sources from which fashion trends have emerged in the world over the past 250 years.
Titled ‘Trend-ology’, the exhibition will showcase 100 pieces from the museum’s permanent collection that aims to highlight industry developments that have had an impact on how trends propagate in the world.
‘Trend-ology’ aims at helping viewers gain an insight into the current state of trend cycle in the fashion industry, by exploring the era when the word ‘trend’ first came into existence. The exhibition features pieces that showcase the advent of fast fashion, the internet, and social media, that has created a quick-paced global environment in which fashion trends emerge and spread in faster and more complex ways than ever before.
Beginning with the 18th century era, the exhibit would trace fashion trend from the mid-19th century, through 20th century, exploring the glamour, style and sensibilities that changed in the fashion industry from the 1940s to the 1980s.
The exhibition would open with an overview of 21st century developments in fashion retailing, with examples of fast-fashion companies like Zara, H & M and Topshop that have contributed to the increasing fascination–and anxiety–surrounding trends.
From 18th century ensembles, 19th century tartan dresses, gowns worn during the Great Depression, French couture after World War II, the rise of London youth culture in the 60s, influence of music and disco during the 70s, to camouflage in 20th century, Trend-ology presents iconic pieces that have left their mark forever in the fashion world.
Organized by Emma McClendon and Ariele Elia, the exhibition is scheduled to run through April 30, 2014.
