Stella McCartney is British Fashion’s Designer of the Year

The British Fashion Council (BFC) announces that Stella McCartney has been named Designer of the Year, receiving the highest accolade at the British Fashion Awards 2012.

Stella also received the Designer Brand award on behalf of her eponymous label, picking up two awards on the evening, both of which recognize a momentous year for the designer through her achievements in the fashion industry and her contribution to Team GB in 2012.

The evening saw 14 awards presented to the leading figures in fashion, recognizing creative talent and design excellence across all areas of the industry. Hosted by Gemma Arterton and Nick Grimshaw at the Savoy Hotel and theatre, the British Fashion Awards were attended by industry leaders, retailers, models, celebrities and media supporting both the winners and nominees of these prestigious awards. Guests on the evening included BFC Ambassador Samantha Cameron, Harold Tillman CBE, Valentino, Manolo Blahnik CBE, Stella McCartney, Sarah Burton, Christopher Kane and Alexa Chung.

“The British Fashion Awards are a significant event which represents the culmination of extraordinary talent, creativity and innovation across the whole industry. The ceremony provides the perfect conclusion to what has been an exceptional year for British fashion and we’re very proud to celebrate the achievements of all the nominees here this evening.” – Harold Tillman CBE, Chairman of the British Fashion Council.

Mr. Tillman was honored on the evening with a Special Recognition award for his term as Chairman of the British Fashion Council and contribution to the fashion industry. In light of the award, Mr. Tillman commented “The last five years have been extraordinary and seeing the BFC and the fashion industry go from strength to strength is a reward in itself so it is completely unexpected to be given this award.  My term as chair ends in just a few weeks time and I am so grateful to all those at the BFC and our designers who have inspired and supported me in equal measure. It has been an honor to serve this great industry for so long – Thank you all.”

The honor of Outstanding Achievement in Fashion was awarded to Manolo Blahnik CBE. This special award is one of the most significant of the evening; it celebrates and recognizes one designer, who throughout their career, has made an impact on the global fashion industry and the award pays tribute to Manolo’s extraordinary career and contribution to fashion.

Beatles Member George Harrison’s Leather Jacket on Sale

The famous clothing item worn by the late English musician George Harrison, celebrated widely for his unforgettable role as the lead guitarist of the popular English rock band The Beatles, will be auctioned at the London-based fine art auctioneering venue Bonhams on December 12, 2012.

The collector’s item, which is a black-colored leather jacket, is expected to fetch a whopping sum of around £120,000 at the auction.

The jacket, which is believed to have initiated the popular ‘leather look’ trend, was worn by the late Beatles member during the band’s high-voltage music performances at The Cavern Club in Liverpool and Hamburg between the years 1960 and 1962.

The garment worn by legendary musician will also be on display for ten days at The Beatles Story museum in Liverpool, before it goes for auction.

The late singer and songwriter George Harrison worked as a successful film producer and philanthropist after the band split-up in 1970.

Other than the spectacular parade of dazzling garments, the event will also feature a special couture show meant only for the cute four-legged canine creatures loved by everybody.

Local Designers Excel at Haiti’s First Fashion Week

For the first time in the history of Haiti, an international fashion show ‘Haiti Fashion Week 2012’ was held in its capital city of Port-au-Prince to provide an international platform for local designers to showcase their creations.

Designs depicting the rich cultural heritage of the Caribbean nation, created by thirty Haitian and foreign designers, were showcased at the fashion week ‘Moda Yiti 2012’.

The show mainly aimed at revitalization of Haiti’s fashion and apparel industry, which will gradually aid the nation to rebuild itself since the country is still recovering from the 2010 earthquake and the recent sandy storm.

Tanya Marie, Rykii De Jude, Daniel Oberti and Musset Payant were some of the prominent international fashion designers who displayed their latest creations at the event.

The event was further illuminated by the presence of popular models Angelova, Izabel, Camille Olivia, Fishel, Nayeli Fanfan and Marina Danae.

The fashion show was organized by the Haitian Center for Support and Promotion of Enterprises (CHAPES) and the Haitian Network of Designers (HAND), in association with Haitian Fashion Industry.

London to host Global Kids Fashion Week Next Year

The first Global Kids Fashion Week to be held in London in March 2013 would host several ramp shows, performances, dialogues and such other activities mainly focusing on high-end kid’s fashion.

The event, which would mark the completion of the fashion week season in the UK, would host two main shows – first, a showcase of latest autumn/winter 2013 collections by world’s leading brands and second, a charity event in support of charity Kids Company, where the company would showcase its own spring/summer 2013 collection.
